At Home Hairapy

Who doesn't love that feeling you have when you've just left the hair salon? Your hair is so silky smooth you can effortlessly run your fingers through it, and you feel like you're in a shampoo commercial for the rest of the day. Ok maybe I'm just talking about personal experience, because I go to the hair dresser's so rarely (I grew up with a Mom who cut my hair better than anyone). I wouldn't say my hair is extremely damaged as it used to be- yes, shocking to most, I used to dye my hair quite dark... we all go through phases, ok? Until I embraced my orange-red locks, I wanted to make it as dark red as possible. Anyway, these days using heat and products on my hair almost on a daily basis doesn't leave my hair feeling as healthy as it could be. I wanted to try to give my hair a little therapy without spending an arm and a leg, and with the most natural ingredients impossible. So one day as I'm reading Cosmopolitan Magazine I came across a recipe that inspired me (although, everyone and their Mother is using products like these at home for multiple uses, so if you do some research, you will find about a gazillion recipes). So just pretend like this is the only one you will ever come across and make me feel a bit more one-of-a-kind :)

WHAT YOU'LL NEED

1/2 a banana OR 1/2 an avocado
1 egg
1 tbsp. of coconut oil
1 tbsp. of olive oil
1 tbsp. of honey
1/4 cup of water

Why these ingredients are purely amazing:

Banana moisturizes and strengthens your hair.
Avocado softens your hair and promotes regular hair growth.
Eggs smoothen (is that even a word?) your hair, and contain proteins which help strengthen the bonds in your strands. As much as regular conditioner has the same purpose, using a straight up egg is the most natural way to go, skipping the chemicals.
Coconut oil makes your hair shiny, and it repairs damaged hair by helping to preserve its natural proteins. Same goes for the olive oil and honey; washing your hair regularly strips those natural oils, so these will give a little back.

Doesn't this just look appetizing? Go ahead, eat it! All edible ingredients... except for maybe the raw egg? I've heard eating raw eggs is bad for you, and other times is fine for you- I guess it depends who you ask... so don't quote me on that.

AN IMPORTANT RECOMMENDATION: If you're using a banana, make sure that bad boy is RIPE. Use one of those black bananas you're storing in your fridge for banana bread. The first one I used I had purchased the day I used it. As much as I mashed it up, there were still little pieces... which were still in my hair even after rinsing this out with shampoo. NOT CUTE.

You will also need:

-a hair clip
-a shower cap

Mix all of your ingredients together, dampen your hair, and saturate your hair with it. You can use a comb to make sure you evenly distribute your treatment, or I just used my bare hands, making sure to coat every strand. Clip up your hair, and then cover it with your shower cap. Leave it on for 15 minutes, and then shampoo your hair. That last step is extremely important- remember, you have put straight up OILS in your hair, so unless you want to look like Danny Zuko afterward (hey, no judgement if you do), then make sure to thoroughly wash all that good stuff out. And then voila! You will instantly feel a difference in your spa treated-like hair.

I have really been into doing face masks recently too, and these typically stay on your face for the same amount of time, so I like to do them together. Why not feel extra smooth on your face afterwards too? Then you'll really feel like you've been pampered. My favourite ones right now are these ones by Baléa. You can find them at Shoppers Drug Mart, and they are very in-expensive.

Happy at-home pampering!
